Donations at the Center for Diversity Education

Thank you for considering a donation to the Center for Diversity Education. Any wise donor has concerns about what the funds are used for. Here are the questions folks most often ask about the work of the Center:

What is your budget?

For 2012-13 it is $90,000 –  Additional funds raised will support the addition of a part-time program coordinator to work directly with schools, enhance programming, and help supervise interns.

What programs do the donations fund?

Examples of K-12 Programming includes

Road Shows Pre service teachers at UNC Asheville educate about cultures and holidays around the world with Seasons of Gratitude, Festivals of Light, and Good Fortune.

 

 

 

 

Safe Schools for All– This coalition works to remove bullying behavior in the community by educating adults who work with youth on how to be an ally and an “upstander”. January 21-25 is No Name Calling Week and a principle project for the coalition. Coalition members include the Jewish Community Center, Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, Youth OUTright, The Mediation Center, among others.

Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality Youth Leadership Program – ASCORE students were 15-18 when they worked for the desegregation of Asheville in 1960-65. There is a project both to record their stories and to raise up the next generation of you civically engaged students. Me2We is the youth leadership development project based on the ASCORE model. 100 students from Asheville Middle and High School participate. Coalition members include City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy, AVID with Asheville City Schools, In Real Life and I Have a Dream.

Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War –  This nationally traveling exhibit was hosted in partnership with UNC Asheville Ramsey Library and included materials from the local archives of the Register of Deeds and Clerk of Court with the slave deeds and last wills and testament. The exhibit was seen by over 5,000 students, teachers, and residents of WNC.  Through the discovery of the slave deeds Buncombe County will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with a showing of the slave deeds at the Register of Deeds office and Pack Library February – June 2013.

Lending Library – The Center travels 11 exhibits for month long loans to k-12 schools at no charge. To view the online version of the exhibits visit www.diversityed.org/digital-exhibits.

In 2013

Parallel Journeys: The Holocaust and WWII – In March this exhibit will be on display at Karpen Lobby. Activities include a keynote address by Dr. Walter Ziffer, student tours, and the one woman show Etty with Susan Stein

Anyday USA with the National Coalition for Community and Justice and the Jewish Community Center – This youth leadership diversity training will take place on MLK Day with 50 students from across the community.

Where do the funds come from?

The office expenses, computers, and salary come from the generous support of the University of North Carolina Asheville. This in-kind contribution is valued at about $70,000. We also rely on the following:

  • Individual/family donations
  • Grants – such as the Amy Mandel and the Katina Rhodis Fund for the Tzedek Intern
  • Fees – Such as the $2.25 per student fee for school-based shows or the trainings for the High Museum
  • Corporate Sponsorships – Such as AT &T’s support of the ASCORE Youth Leadership Program

What specifically do donations cover?

  • $25.00 funds one month of Survey Monkey for program evaluation
  • $225.00 pays for one grade level of a school who cannot afford the Road Show costthe Road
  • $300 covers the shipping costs of an exhibit from Kennesaw State University one way
  • $500 funds one UNC Asheville intern for one semester
  • $1,200 covers the cost of the on-line data base Donor Perfect for one year
  • $2,000 covers the speaker’s fees and expenses for the Me2We Youth Leadership Conference
  • $5,000 pays for the reformatting of an exhibit to a self-standing system
