The Heroic Present Professional Development Seminar, March 20

A professional development deminar on stereotyping and the Holocaust will be held on Tuesday March 20 from 4:30 - 6:30pm in the Laurel Forum of Karpen Hall at UNC Asheville. This seminar will look at the impact that assumptions and stereotypes have on individuals and groups of people from a variety of perspectives. Included will be a presentation by Julia Shuster on the Senti Roma community of Europe and a tour of the exhibit "The Heroic Present". This seminar will fulfill the requirements for .2 hours of CEU's.

The Heroic Present: The Gypsy Photographs of Jan Yoors at UNC Asheville

“The Heroic Present: The Gypsy Photographs of Jan Yoors” will be on display in Karpen Lobby of UNC Asheville from March 1 – April 16, 2012. Yoors was just twelve years old when he left his home in Belgium in search of a group of Roma (gypsies) known as Lovara, who lived on the outskirts of Antwerp. For the next six years, he traveled widely and was informally adopted by a Lovara family. When the war began, Jan joined the British army and recruited his Roma friends to assist Allied intelligence unites in smuggling arms to the resistance.
