Staff

Deborah Miles, Executive Director

Deborah is responsible for overall organizational management, staff supervision, programming direction and fundraising efforts as well as specific initiatives for UNC Asheville. Deborah received her BA from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in 1975. In 1995, she founded the Center for Diversity Education at the Asheville Jewish Community Center. In 2005, Deborah received the nationally recognized Nancy Susan Reynolds Award for race relations from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Julia Shuster, Programming Director

Julia organizes and directs all K-12 programming at the Center.  Her responsibilities include coordinating annual school programs and field trips, teacher and staff trainings, and supervising pre-service educators interning at the Center's office. Julia received her B.A. from Penn State in German Studies and her M.A. in International Education from the School for International Training.  Her previous professional titles include Housing and Customized Program Manager at the Institute for the International Education of Students in Berlin, Germany and an Intercultural Competency teaching position at Wake Forest University.  She currently lives in West Asheville with her husband, Rene, and her three cats.  Being a native of Pittsbugh, PA, she is also a true Steelers fan.

ohia, AmeriCorps*VISTA Multimedia and Social Networking Coordinator

As the Multimedia and Social Networking Coordinator for CDE ohia will design and develop a new more interactive website that will enable the Center to use current exhibits as an on line learning tool vastly widening the numbers of people who could make use of these exhibits. She will expand the presence of The Center on social networks in an effort to bring awareness to activities and exhibits going on throughout the year. As a natural networker she will strengthen Asheville's diverse community through building new relationships with other local organizations, businesses, and non-profits. ohia received her AA in design, illustration and computer graphics from The Creative Center in Omaha, NE in 2000. In 2001 she became heavily involved in activism and traveling. After a 6 year hiatus from design she bought a Mac and got back in the game. Since then she has won many local and national awards.
